ttTu Tram Pham (alias Dahlia) is a native Montrealer who has taken on the fashion beat on her blog, Dualité, delving into subjects from consumerism to the business of fashion. She is currently attending Concordia University to pursue a diploma in Journalism in the Continuing Education program.

Her contributions have included writing for The Link (one of Concordia’s student newspapers), Gloss Magazine, and The Business of Fashion.

Skipping all the formalities – I’m an aspiring fashion journalist who doesn’t quite cover fashion like a fashion editor at a magazine would. In fact, I am hoping to cover fashion in the likes of The New York Times or The Wall Street Journal, unfortunately in Montreal I find that fashion journalism is severely lacking as editors tend to cover the matter subjectively rather than objectively. Dualité doesn’t particularly cover new emerging local designers or profiles on the hottest new stores, instead it rather takes on a more conscious approach to retail and consumerism culture.

Trends and designers come and go. We’ll see a lot of beautiful and ugly things in our lives, but I’m not interested in covering the beauties and the beasts of the industry (unless we’re talking about companies).

I am hoping that fashion journalism in Canada in general will emerge to find its own voice and cater to those who don’t care to be banned from fashion shows or who aren’t sent a courteous swag bag. I admire the fashion journalists who are not afraid of expressing their opinions, whether good or bad, and hope that someday I may find my own place among them.
